To create a car much faster will require adding even more weight, and delivering even more power to the wheels. The added weight means diminishing returns in the power-to-weight domain. Additional power means more wheelspin.

Look at a Champ car and consider how radical its appearance is compared to a passenger car. Consider also that a Champ car does not go much faster than the Veyron. The Veyron probably approaches the outer limits of the passenger car envelope, and we are unlikely to see much beyond the Veyron in terms of performance.

• Let’s convert over to metric. Gasoline requires about 14.7 kilograms of air to burn 1 kilogram of gas. Air weighs 1.222 kilograms per cubic meter at sea level. A gallon of gasoline weighs 2.84 kilograms. So the engine has to be able to process 2.84*1.33*14.7 kilograms of air per minute, or roughly 45 cubic meters of air per minute. That’s 45,000 liters of air per minute.
• If a V-8 engine is turning at 6,000 rpm, it can inhale a total of 24,000 cylinders’ full of air per minute. If it needs to inhale 45,000 liters of air per minute, it works out to roughly 2 liters per cylinder-full. That’s a 16-liter engine.

Fiat’s most advanced Crdi diesel engine

The 1.3-litre Multijet engine on the present Fiat Punto delivers a 51 KW at 4,000 r/min and 180 Nm at just 1 750 r/min. It allows the Punto 1.3 JTD Multijet a top speed of 164 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 13.4 seconds. Fuel consumption figures are among the best in the segment with a combined cycle of 4.5 litres/100km.

Fiat says this engine is the smallest and most advanced second generation common rail direct injection diesel engine and features multi-point injection, 16 valves, an intercooler and a particularly efficient combustion chamber shape. When clad with all its accessories it weighs only 130 kg.

The Multijet system gives more precise injection of fuel, and also leads to much quieter running.

New Indica Unveiled !!

The new Indica is longer and wider than the current model with more legroom inside. The new Indica would be powered by a 1.3 litre quadra jet common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engine (sourced from Fiat and the same engine which does duty in the Swift) and a 1.2 litre VVT petrol engine which would be manufactured at the Fiat-tata plant at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra. The new Indica would have larger 14 inch wheels with 175/65 spec tubeless tyres and finally the tyres fill up the wheelarch unlike the current Indica. The new Indica is likely to be priced between Rs.4 – 5 lakh and would be launched by mid 2008.

Concept cars from maruti into real

Suzuki Motor Corporation showcased its fifth global car ‘A-Star’ concept, which will be manufactured only in India. The company also showcased two other concept cars ‘Splash’ and ‘Kazshi’.

“Our new plant in Manesar will play an important role in Suzuki Motor’s target of selling three billion units globally by the financial year 2008-09. Production of A-Star will begin here from October,” Shinzo Nakanishi, managing director, Maruti Suzuki India, said at the 9th Auto Expo today.

Production of A-Star will start initially for the Indian market and it would be exported at a later stage, he added.

Nakanishi also said Maruti will launch one new model in India every year to consolidate its market position.

Suzuki Motor owns 54.2% stake in Maruti Suzuki India.

Maruti Suzuki has hiked the price of Swift by Rs 9,500 across all variants in both petrol and diesel version, a company official said.
